Southwest Colorado is the perfect spot to elope if you’re looking for a stunning, adventurous location that is tucked away from the city noise. A San Juan Mountains elopement is full of unique, natural beauty that can only be reached by straying away from the more popular locations in CO. These little mountain towns that are scattered within the San Juan range are delightfully quaint, quiet, and close to the high alpine experiences full of rugged peaks, crystal clear lakes, and wildflower-filled meadows. Many couples are choosing to get further away from the typical Colorado tourist attractions and elope here in the Southwest corner. Here is a guide full of the most important information to make your dream day in the San Juans a reality from a local photographer/SW CO native!
Upscale, picturesque and wildly scenic. It’s a small town framed by dramatic 13,000+ ft peaks and the iconic free gondola. Perfect for couples who want epic alpine scenery but don’t want to compromise on luxury accommodations or dining. Cost $$$ (the most expensive option, especially in peaks seasons). A true high-end, lux elopement experience. Elopement locations nearby: Bridal Veil Falls (the tallest free-flowing waterfall in CO), Trout Lake, San Sophia Overlook, Alta Lakes, Lizard Head Pass, Last Dollar Road, Telluride Ski Resort.
Quant, quiet, and adventure-focused. Known as the “Switzerland of America” for its jagged peaks and endless mountain access. For couples who value a more intimate experience and local feel with incredible 4×4 and hiking trails nearby. THE place to go if you’re planning on Jeeping into the iconic alpine lakes/mountain passes. Cost $$ (mid-range lodging and food options available). Elopement locations nearby: Box Canyon Falls, Yankee Boy Basin, Imogene Pass, Twin Peaks, Million Dollar Highway overlooks. Hit the hot springs for some relaxation while you’re in town! Many of the lodging options have private springs, as well.
Remote, historic, uniquely wild. It truly feels like taking a step back in time because of the rugged vibe of the town and its rich mining history. Ideal for the couple who wants the true Western Colorado experience complete with high-altitude views and seclusion. It’s an amazing launching ground for all kinds of mountain adventures- Jeeping, hiking, skiing, etc. Cost $ (fewer options for lodging and food, but more budget friendly). Elopement locations nearby: Ice Lakes, Molas Pass, the historic church, Eureka Lodge, Handies Peak, Columbine Lake.
Laid-back, artsy, full of energy. The largest of the mountain towns mentioned, Durango is a great home base to explore the San Juans and the the smaller towns nearby. Perfect for couples who want to elope in nature but also want craft beer, cozy Airbnbs, and easy travel options. Home to the iconic narrow gauge railroad that takes you up to Silverton- a great experience to see the area. Cost $$ (a variety of lodging and food options from budget friendly to luxury). Elopement locations nearby: Engineer Mountain, Potato Lake, Cascade Canyon and Falls, Lake Nighthorse, Purgatory Ski Resort.
Peaceful, rustic, off the beaten path. I think Dolores is such a hidden gem and is yet to be discovered for all that it has to offer. I grew up in Dolores, so I know all of the incredible trails and views that can be accessed. It’s near the desert as well as the high alpine, so couples who want a mix of both may want to consider staying here. Ideal for people who value a slower pace and want to escape the tourists and crowds. Cost $ (simple, affordable lodging and food options. Not for those who want luxury!) Elopement locations nearby: Dunton Hot Springs, the town of Rico, Dolores river basin, unlimited trails and national forest access
Just because we are in a more remote part of the state doesn’t mean it’ll be a nightmare to travel in! There are plenty of options to make your travel go smoothly:
I would recommend flying into one of the regional airports, if possible. They will be a little bit more expensive than the international ones, but the cost usually comes to about the same when you factor in gas to get over here from the larger cities. If you’re wanting a road trip tour of the area, driving in from a major airport would be fun, but if you’re wanting to keep it as low-stress and simple as possible, I’d recommend La Plata County Airport or Montrose Regional Airport.
From there, make sure to rent a car that has relatively high clearance and 4 wheel drive. If you’re doing some adventuring for your elopement, the last thing that you want to happen is to get stuck or ruin your rental car! You can also opt to rent a smaller vehicle for your trip and then go through a Jeep rental company for your actual elopement day for a super capable car that can get you to the epic views.
Many couples planning a San Juan Mountains elopement are drawn to the area because of it’s incredible, panoramic views of peaks and unique alpine lakes. However, most of these sights require a little bit of adventuring to get to. They aren’t right off the highway- they’re up in the mountains in basins that can only be accessed via Jeep, OHV, 4×4, or an involved hike. That being said, if you’re set on getting married with the best view possible, you will have to decide if taking a high-clearance vehicle or hiking is more up your alley.
Hiking into your location is a fun memory-making experience if you’re a couple who has built your relationship on being in the outdoors together. It’s not for everyone because you will get sweaty, dirty, and out of breath, but there are options to still look your best for vows! You can hike in normal clothes and then change into your wedding attire at the top, bring your makeup or a touchup kit with you, and have your hair done but up to take down when it’s time for vows. Make sure you do your research on your hike beforehand, hire a photographer who is comfortable hiking (I am!!) bring lots of water, and wear comfy shoes!
Jeeping is an alternative to hiking to access the high-alpine views that you’re dreaming of for your San Juan Mountains elopement. Around here, there is a huge OHV culture and any town that you’re staying in will have rental options. You can rent a vehicle to drive yourself or hire a company to guide you to the best spots. It is definitely an authentic CO experience and will be a great memory for you to include in your wedding day. Of course, it will be more expensive than hiking and you will be limited to the OHV roads since you can’t drive on foot-traffic only trails. However, there are still so many options for jaw-dropping spots to get to in a 4×4!
(Rent a Jeep or OHV in Ouray, Telluride, or Durango if you don’t have a capable vehicle! Rentals for a full day are usually around $200-$300 and are SO worth it for the views that you’ll be able to access!)
If you want a mix of adventure and comfort, check out these intimate wedding venues in the area. These are also a great option if you want a private elopement in the mountains and then a party with guests afterwards. Consider these your base camp!
If it hasn’t sunk in yet, your elopement day is all about doing exactly what you want to do- so your attire is no different. Ultimately, you should feel 100% comfortable, happy, beautiful, and wonderful in whatever you wear, so please don’t feel any pressure to wear something that doesn’t speak to you. My best advice in the beginning stages of picking out your elopement attire is to keep an open mind. Many couples have told me that they started shopping for one particular style in mind and ended up with choosing something completely different. It happens all the time!
Even if you’re not hiking, you’ll likely want to be able to move around freely. Are you able to take a big upward step in the dress? Will you be able to climb up on a rock or tree stump for an epic photo? Raise both arms up, dance, skip, run, swish it! Make sure it has the movement you love. It doesn’t have to be white- it can be any color you want!
It doesn’t have to be black and the top doesn’t have to match the bottom! Mixing and matching colors and materials for jackets and pants can be a fun way to add personality to your attire. Don’t be afraid to think outside the traditional box. Consider fun patterns and materials in your ensemble. Not everything has to be black tie formal or traditional linen and don’t forget about accessories!
Shoes are the most important part to being comfortable. If you want to wear a heel or a fancier shoe for your vows, pack it in! Do most of the day in a comfy shoe or a hiking shoe and then change for the ceremony or a few photos.
Don’t forget layers!! Bring leggings, warm socks, jackets, rain coats, hats, gloves, umbrellas, and anything else that would keep you comfortable if weather were to take a turn. The weather for your San Juan Mountains elopement will be unpredictable, so you may not end up using any of your layer options, but it’s always better to have them just in case.
Timeline planning is not about scheduling out every minute of your day, but rather making sure that you have time for everything you want to do, see, and experience together. Leave room for spontaneity. You ditched the big traditional wedding so you wouldn’t feel rushed and stressed, so don’t allow those feelings to creep into your elopement day either.
Give yourself lots of extra cushion in your day for transitions, spontaneous adventure, and for if you end up running a bit behind at some point. Consider carving out time in your day to enjoy an experience together that may be a bit unusual for a wedding day but is important to and uniquely you. Is your favorite way to spend a morning making French toast and hanging with your doggos? Do it! Love to play an instrument and want to surprise your partner with a song? Go for it!
One big decision when it comes to creating a timeline for your elopement is what time of day you want to have your elopement ceremony and have your couples portraits taken. Sunrise and sunset are favorite times among photographers to take pictures because of the golden lighting and vibrant colors that are caused by the sun being low in the sky. In sunny climates, midday sunlight can create harsh under-eye shadows, which is why the middle of the day is when I usually recommend doing indoor photos, getting ready photos, traveling or hiking, doing activities, or hanging out and relaxing.
Here are a few elopements that I’ve photographed in these wonderful mountains. If you’re interested in seeing full galleries or more photos of a specific location, reach out and I’ll send you a link to my full portfolio page!
I can’t stress enough how important it is to hire local vendors for your elopement day. People who live in these towns, have personal adventures in these mountains, and call the San Juans home will make your day go so smoothly. Having people on your side who have knowledge about local permitting, hidden gem locations, and mountain logistics is key! Having grown up here, I am a true native and I would love to help you plan your dream day 🙂
